The first quarter of 2017 is over and it’s time to figure out how it has been. The year had promised big bonanzas because every actor and superstar worth their salt has at least one release this year. While Shah Rukh Khan already minted money with Raees, there’s his Imtiaz Ali film which is expected to be money spinner again. Akshay Kumar might just have four films this year and Salman will have two releases again after 2015 (Tubelight and Tiger Zinda Hai). Hence, it was expected to take a great start and to some extent it did. In last three months, there have been four Rs 100 crore films (which is a first, btw) but none of them are BLOCKBUSTERS. Let’s take a stock of things.

Winners of the first quarter

Many rue that Bollywood is a star-driven industry but have they ever paused to think how is Bollywood staying afloat despite having more number of failures than successes every year? It’s because of these stars that the industry is alive and kicking. This quarter they were the ones who saved the day. Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan’s films clashed at the box office but thanks to their immense star power, both Raees and Kaabil managed to make over Rs 100 crore. Later Akshay Kumar, fresh out of a very successful 2016, gave yet another winner with Jolly LLB 2. These days expecting Rs 100 crore from his films have become customary. And in the midst of such biggies, Varun Dhawan gave yet another hit along with Alia Bhatt. He is a youngster who might soon join the league of Shah Rukh, Salman, Aamir and Akshay. We are pretty sure of that.

Losers of the first quarter

Every film that released other than Raees, Kaabil, Jolly LLB 2 and BKD, have been nothing but failures. So apart from being Rs 100 crore films, they are the only ones that worked at the box office. Ok Jaanu which was the first big film of 2017 was an utter disappointment. Neither did critics applaud nor audience gave it any love at the box office. The Ghazi Attack got rave reviews but no box office gains. But the biggest disappointment of this quarter was the failure of a big budget movie like Rangoon. That’s going to sting! Kangana Ranaut’s might couldn’t save the film either, nor could Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan’s presence.
